How to sell VIP tickets
A VIP tier done well lifts revenue 15–30% while making the standard ticket look like a bargain. Done badly — a lanyard and a roped-off corner — it generates the most damaging complaints an event can earn. The difference is whether the premium is real.
What UK fans actually pay premiums for
- Time: early entry, queue-jump, soundcheck access — the most reliably valued perk at every scale.
- Position: front sections, balconies, reserved tables with sightlines.
- Proximity: meet-and-greets and signed items — high value, high logistics; cap them hard.
- Comfort: own bar, better loos, cloakroom priority — quietly the strongest driver for 30+ audiences.
Weak: branded tat and 'exclusive' areas visibly worse than the main floor. Fans price the bundle in seconds; pad it and the whole tier reads fake.
Pricing and capacity
- Price at 2–3× standard. Below 1.5× nobody believes it; above 3× you need artist proximity in the bundle.
- Cap at 5–10% of capacity — scarcity is part of what's bought.
- Use it as the anchor: the £75 VIP exists partly to make £30 standard feel sensible. It works even at modest sell-through.
Deliver it visibly
Separate entrance (signed), staff briefed on every perk, and the perks physically checkable from a lanyard or wallet pass. One VIP who queued in the main line undoes the tier's reputation for a year — over-deliver on the first edition and screenshot the praise.
Questions people ask
What margin should VIP run at?
70%+ on the uplift — perks costing more than ~30% of the premium usually mean you've bundled logistics, not value. Time-based perks (early entry) cost nearly nothing and are valued most.
Should VIP go on sale first?
Yes — VIP-first on-sales harvest the superfans at full value and generate the 'VIP sold out' signal that boosts standard. Never discount VIP late; quietly release 'final VIP tables' instead.
